After my death our beloved Church abroad will break three ways ... first the Greeks will leave us as they were never a part of us ... then those who live for this world and its glory will go to Moscow ... what will remain will be those souls faithful to Christ and His Church. ~St. Philaret of NY

Metropolitan Agafangel's Visit to the USA

October 21 - 30, 2011

The Most Reverend Agafangel, Metropolitan of Eastern America and New York, arrived at Newark Airport on the evening of October 21. From there he went to the Tolstoy Foundation in Valley Cottage, NY, where the Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh is located (Fr. Gregory Kotlaroff is the rector).

The next day, October 22, (the day on which St. Andronik is honored), was the nameday of Archbishop Andronik. Met. Agafangel attended Divine Liturgy at Mountain View officiated by Archbishop Andronik along with Protopriest Gregory Kotlaroff and Deacon Fr. Juvenaly (Polovinkin). Fr. Nikita Grigoriev and  Matushka Joanna were also present. A festive trapeza was enjoyed by all after the service.

Major renovations are being undertaken at Mountain View. All the windows are currently being replaced and an iconostasis is being installed in the renovated church area.

That evening, Met. Agafangel served Vigil at the St. Sergius of Radonezh church in Valley Cottage. He celebrated Divine Liturgy the next day along with Protopriest Gregory and Protodeacon Job.

The next day, Met. Agafangel along with Abp. Andronik, Protopriests Gregory Kotlaroff and Vsevolod Dutikow and diocesan secretary Dimitri Gontscharow traveled to the St. Nicholas Convent in Cleveland, NY, where they met with Archbishop Chrysostomos and Bishop Auxentios of the Greek Old Calendar Church.  At the meeting, Met. Agafangel proposed creating a central website for the ROCA and the Greek, Romanian and Bulgarian Old Calendar Churches, which would provide news about life in the sister churches in various languages. The abbess of the convent, Mother Agapia, provided lunch after the meeting.

On Tuesday, October 25, a joint meeting of the New York and Syracuse dioceses took place at Valley Cottage.  Among the many important matters discussed, a decision was made to create a pension fund for the clergy and a fund for donations to purchase property in New York to be used by the Synod.

Met. Agafangel met with parishioners living in the New York area during his visit. On October 29, Met. Agafangel served Vigil and Divine Liturgy the next day at the Holy Trinity Church in Astoria along with Protopriest Vsevolod Dutikow and Fr. Victor Dobroff and Deacon Fr. Dmitriy Dobronravov. Met. Agafangel flew back to Odessa that evening.
