After my death our beloved Church abroad will break three ways ... first the Greeks will leave us as they were never a part of us ... then those who live for this world and its glory will go to Moscow ... what will remain will be those souls faithful to Christ and His Church. ~St. Philaret of NY

Fr. Vladimir's sermon about Fr. Wsewolod

On the eve of the 40th day after the repose of the Mitered Protopriest Wsewolod Dutikow, let us remember the words said by Very Reverend Vladimir Petrenko after the Sunday Liturgy on September 6 (the first Sunday after the repose of Fr. Wsewolod)

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ!

We have become orphans. The Lord has taken from us our dear Father Vsevolod. He reposed last Thursday while walking on the beach, in a place where he always loved to visit. In a Christian manner, reflecting what we hear at each service, his repose was “painless, shameless and peaceful”. So pass on the righteous, who as we all know he was.

I knew Fr Vsevolod for twenty years, and in that time our friendship turned into a love of a son for his father and father to son, for he was able to show such love. I am certain, that other’s recounts of their time with Fr Vsevolod will likewise talk of such a genuine love.

Love formed the basis of his service and ministry. The compassionate love that is required of a pastor. He not only knew us all, but he sympathized with all our experiences. Sometimes it was as though he knew us better than we know ourselves!

It is sad when such a unique person leaves us temporarily. And yes, it is temporary, because as the Lord said: "God is not God of the dead but of the living, for all live to him." How these words of the Gospel touch our hearts!

So, a person is taken into the new world, a wonderful world, beautiful, perfect where the key is love. A world where, as the words of the funeral service remind us, there is no pain, no sorrow, but only the perfect love God has of man. Thus we should not grieve too much, for our beloved Father Vsevolod is now in the kingdom of heaven. So we should be comforted that we will meet with him there once again. For this is the beauty, the Christian meaning of the Resurrection.

Brothers and Sisters in Christ, even though you are now concerned about being apart and that we miss him, we should be comforted that we will again meet in the kingdom of heaven!

Pray for him and he will always prayed for you, which he will now do in front of the throne of God.

Do not forget, and do not abandon this church, where Fr. Vsevolod worked so hard and loved. On the contrary, come often and remember your former pastor in prayer. Pray to God and the Mother of God, and ask Father Vsevolod for his prayers that a new pastor is sent, who with your help, will try to continue the work that our father always did with so much love.

Also, do not forget our dear Matushka, who is suffering most of all. Support her and be helpful to her. She may not have completely comprehended all that has happened yet, but when she does, she will need a lot of your support.

Let us remember Father Vsevolod as he always was - cheerful, and let his memory remain forever in our hearts. Amen.
