After my death our beloved Church abroad will break three ways ... first the Greeks will leave us as they were never a part of us ... then those who live for this world and its glory will go to Moscow ... what will remain will be those souls faithful to Christ and His Church. ~St. Philaret of NY

A brief overview:
He himself entered our ROCA and was accepted by our ROCA Synod, as a bishop,
[ he did physically come to our ROCA's  Odessa St. Michael's Cathedral, for his official reception],  but so far, he has been unable to
convince his divided and confused flock (all  embroiled in  the  never-ending bitter chaos of the many ever increasing splits
of the ROCiE  and/or [?]  RTOC schisms) to come with him. He is stating that, he has never ceased commemorating
in the Eucharist, as his head,
our Metropolitan Agafangel...i.e. that he is a member of our ROCA. He is still loyal to our ROCA, no matter who
 follows him, or not.
I wish we had an English translation of what he says here in Russian.

Metropolitan Moses on False Elders and the EP

from a sermon on the Sunday of Orthodoxy

From the early days of the Church to the latter days, the saints of the Church recognized the danger of heresy. Today we hear from false elders and teachers that communion with heresy is a matter of indifference. Some say, for example, that regardless of what the Patriarch of Constantinople believes or says or what his official policies are, everyone should remain in communion with him. We all revere the historical position of the institution of the Patriarchate of Constantinople and all of the other Patriarchates, but these ancient Sees have been hijacked and their thrones are not occupied by genuine Orthodox Christian hierarchs. The only saving response to all of this is to humbly follow in the footsteps of the Holy Fathers and struggle to maintain the purity of the Orthodox Faith by separating from them. The witness of Church History and the lives of the saints testify that there is no other way.

False Elder Ephraim of Katounakia

This post is taken from "Scott Nevins Memorial" blog (anonymous blog owner):

The Errors of Blind Obedience or Neo-Gerondism Part 1

"Behold, obedience [is] better than a good sacrifice, and hearkening than the fat of rams." - I Samuel 15:22
Recently, much has been said and written on the subject of obedience to an elder. This is all the “fashion,” but does it really express our faith? Or perhaps it is associated with occultism? And if so, how is it related?
Here are some excerpts from a non-published para-religious pamphlet on the subject of obedience to a Geronda:1

The Elder speaks, God speaks. The mouth of the Elder is the mouth of Christ.
“The Elder speaks, God speaks. The mouth of the Elder is the mouth of Christ.” – Elder Ephraim of Katounakia

“The monk under obedience is a blank sheet of paper. There is nothing there for the devil to interrogate him about. The obedient disciple has no temptations because the Elder takes them on. The value of the Elder cannot be matched by the value of the whole world or even of the entire Holy Mountain.” (P. 6)

"Your spiritual Father and Elder is worth much more to you than all the people of the earth, even more than the whole universe!" - Elder Ephraim of Arizona
“Your spiritual Father and Elder is worth much more to you than all the people of the earth, even more than the whole universe!” – Elder Ephraim of Arizona

“Question: How does the subordinate who does obedience feel the union he must have with his elder? Perhaps with the peace and serenity that is within him?
Answer: How can I say it? How can I express this? It is this, of course, but he mainly sees his Geronda, and advances; he neither fears God nor hell! Nothing scares him! My Geronda told me that. I’ve tried it; I fear neither hell nor God! Nothing! My Elder said that!

Question: And if the Geronda gives you a command that is wrong?
Answer: It never comes to evil, because it is obedience in the middle.” (P. 10)
“Question: At one point, some stumble in relation to obedience. I.e., lest they make a kind of circumvention of the sanity which God gave them; namely the logic God has given them. This is white, this is black; that one green; the other blue. Now if he tells you to call the white black, perhaps you abuse sanity, so to speak?
“Answer: This is obedience my Father; this is obedience. Be convinced that it is black, and it’s not the white you see! You see it white; the Geronda sees it black. The Geronda sees it correctly, properly! This is obedience!! To convince yourself that it is black and not white as you see it!! This is obedience. Do not believe even in your eyes.” (P. 11)2

"Never examine what your Elder does or why he does this or that. Do not judge him, for you will become an antichrist!" - Elder Ephraim of Arizona
“Never examine what your Elder does or why he does this or that. Do not judge him, for you will become an antichrist!” – Elder Ephraim of Arizona

“Do you do obedience? Then God’s commandments, so to speak, don’t concern you! You are somewhat indifferent; they don’t concern you and God does not frighten you! You do obedience; that which God commanded you. The Geronda is the visible God. By doing obedience to the Geronda, which God ordered, you are not interested at all, nor care, nor are concerned at all, about what God wants! The mouth of the Geronda is the mouth of God! God, the Elder, ordered the subordinates. And don’t do prayer and don’t do anything, you’re for Paradise. While on the contrary, if you do them when you don’t obey, you are for hell.” (Pp. 13-14)

"Abba Barsanuphius says that a disciple who disobeys his Elder is a 'son of the devil.'" - Counsels from the Holy Mountain
“Abba Barsanuphius says that a disciple who disobeys his Elder is a ‘son of the devil.'” – Counsels from the Holy Mountain

“The Geronda holds the position of the visible God! When God says the word, does he recall it again? Certainly not! The Geronda spoke, that’s final. The only man that I loved in my life was the Geronda. And the only man whom I feared was the Geronda. Fear in conjunction with love.” (P. 16)
However, should we see the white as black and the black as white?
The answer is found in the Holy Scriptures:
“Woe [to them] that call evil good, and good evil; who make darkness light, and light darkness; who make bitter sweet, and sweet bitter.” (Isaiah 5:20)
When we say things like the aforementioned, then what else is this but Papacy? (Note that the Latin Church is one thing and Papism as a mentality and behavior is another.) The question is whether we call this person “Pope” or if we call him “Geronda” or whatever? Actually, here we see a whole other religion, where God has absolutely no position; essentially atheism and idolatry. The word “antichrist”, lexically, means ‘one who replaces Christ.’ In the Christian faith, man doesn’t replaces God, just as God does not replace man ….

“What seems to me white, I will believe black if the hierarchical Church so defines.” - Ignatius of Loyola
“What seems to me white, I will believe black if the hierarchical Church so defines.” – Ignatius of Loyola

1) These exact quotes appear in the biographies of Elder Ephraim of Katounakia, Obedience Is Life and Elder Ephraim of Katounakia. The latter book is read frequently in Geronda Ephraim’s monasteries (both in the trapeze, and recommended personal reading for the monastics).
2) This echoes the Jesuit Ignatius Loyola’s teachings in his Spiritual Exercises, “What seems to me white, I will believe black if the hierarchical Church so defines.” (See: The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, Vintage Books edition, Rules, 352-362, 365, pp. 124-124 to read more about the Jesuit concept of blind obedience to the Pope).
3) Note, though the Gerondas do not claim infallibility, they teach the patristic doctrines that the first word out of their mouth is God’s will for you. If you rebut, the next words are his own, but not God’s will for you. Elder Ephraim of Katounakia also teaches, “The Elder speaks, God speaks. The mouth of the Elder is the mouth of Christ…He who does obedience to his Elder imitates Christ, Who did Obedience to His Father…The Elder is the source of peace, the source of grace, the source of salvation, the source of Paradise…It is easy for someone to leave the world. It is very difficult for one to find a guide! It is difficult!”

Neo-Athos Elders Contradict Themselves

Their actions do not match their words.

Elder Ephraim of Katounaki (1998†) says that ecumenism is from hell.  Yet, he is part of the EP.

We can agree that ecumenism is from hell.  Ecumenism is the culmination of all heresies, the "Heresy of Heresies", wrought by the Antichrist in these end times for the establishment of Antichrist's One World Church.  But how can we agree with being a part of the EP?  The EP is the personification of ecumenism, and the new calendar is one of ecumenism's servants, a most profitable servant indeed.

Neo-Athos elder against ecumenism

Elder Ephraim of Katounakia (1998†): Ecumenism is Dominated by Unclean Spirits
 by Dr. Demetrios Tselengidis (GOA)

In what follows, I will say something that pertains to a personal deposition. I was associated for decades with Fr. Ephraim of Katounakia, of renowned ethos and conscience. Also renowned was the fact that he also possessed a “spiritual television”. As for me, I had gone to him on many occasions with the intention of posing certain very specific questions, in a specific sequence, and using my own vocabulary. When I did visit him, and without having posed any of my intended questions, he gave me his replies, in my intended sequence, and with my vocabulary. I am mentioning this as a personal experience; it is not an unprecedented phenomenon - it has been experienced by many others also.
There was one time when, as a young professor at the School of Theology at the time, about thirty years ago, I had mentioned the following to him: given that the clime of Ecumenism has also been flourishing in the School of Theology, especially that of Thessaloniki, I had certain nagging problems and questions, because I could see it being represented by otherwise respected professors. Naturally, both my conscience as well as my learning had reacted against it, however, I desired, beyond my scientific status, to also obtain a charismatic reply, which is something that I did for many other issues.
So I asked him on the matter in hand - if he could tell me what kind of thing Ecumenism is.
He replied outright and without any difficulty:
"This question, my child, had also been posed by someone else, some time before you. I myself have been up here on these rocks for forty years... I have even forgotten my Greek (note that he had completed Middle School) and as such, I haven’t preoccupied myself with that issue. But, because I had to reply – seeing that I had been asked about it, and since I had no knowledge of the matter - I went to my cell and prayed, asking Christ to inform me what Ecumenism is. I received His reply, which was that Ecumenism has a spirit of wickedness and is dominated by unclean spirits."
So I asked him exactly how that was verified. He replied that "after praying, my cell became filled with an unbearable stench, which caused my soul to feel asphyxiated; I couldn’t breathe spiritually."
I asked him if that had been an extraordinary event for him, or if that was the way that Christ responds in analogous cases, and he assured me that "in all the cases that are involved with sorcery, with unclean spirits, that is the state in which He enlightens me. Sometimes there is a spoken response, but in the present case, that was His answer and I have the absolute certainty that Ecumenism does not have the Holy Spirit, but the unclean spirit."
What I am saying at this moment one might say has the character of intentional impressions. But I want to inform you that I was overjoyed, because what the elder had told me in person, I had also seen recorded by his pious retinue, who had published an honorary tomos about his person, his spirituality and his words. So it has been certified in there as well, but it has also been verified with other, trustworthy theologians, who likewise happened to have heard it personally.
I had not publicly mentioned this until now; but things have taken such a turn, that I am obliged to bring it up. Of course it had played a decisive role in my stance towards Ecumenism. As a professor, a scientist, I am naturally obliged in every case to examine the matter with scientific criteria and to substantiate my viewpoint scientifically – and that is what I do in my classes also, step by step; however, I regard this deposition to be significant, because it was delivered in a charismatic manner by a man who knew nothing about the issue. He had never read, never heard of it, and yet, he deposited his direct spiritual experience. I think that things speak for themselves here.

Neo-Athos elders in the EP

Two Holy Fathers on the Calendar Issue: Elder Ephraim of Katounakia and Elder Joseph the Hesychast
 by Elder Joseph of Vatopaidi

When the New Calendar entered into the life of the Church after 1924, the entire Holy Mountain, for reasons of tradition, maintained the use of the Old Calendar, without severing communion with and maintaining dependency upon the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, and consequently, with the other Orthodox Churches.
Because of this calendar change, some Athonite Monks - the self-titled "Zealots"- broke their spiritual communion with the Patriarchate and the rest of the Holy Mountain. They would participate neither in Liturgies, nor in festal celebrations, nor even communicate with the rest of the fathers.
Katounakia was one of the centers of the Zealots and Papa Ephraim was one of them. Moved by spiritual zeal, both he and Elder Joseph the Hesychast initially joined the extremist party of the so-called "Matthewites". When an issue arises concerning the faith, naturally fanaticism will rise up.
The grandiose Matthew, who so occupied Athonite monasticism, proceeded from another Matthew, a Cretan monk. Matthew had obvious rebellious tendencies, and thus they readily induced him to take hold of some authority on account of the calendar disorder.
Increasing the degree of fanaticism surrounding the calendar change, and depicting the Church as lapsed, Matthew created that which pleased him. He became "super-orthodox" and worked up his followers with sermons and demonstrations. This still occurs today with some of his followers - a fresh wound to the bosom of the Church.
As always, every source of scandal creates fanaticism and unrest - mostly from ignorance - until the true state of affairs is revealed. It was natural for the fathers in the desert areas to be found among the fanatics, since anxiety and ignorance were prevalent, and because they had an acute fear that perhaps they would betray their faith.
Then, in opposition to the Matthewite harshness, the Florinite moderation appeared. The Florinites avoided the severity of the Matthewites, maintaining a milder stance, even though they were still "zealots". The fathers then turned towards this faction. They chose the "lesser of two evils" as the better even though they were still not at peace with this.
The living Church, unjustly cast aside, was protesting with their consciences, causing them unrest. The solution for them was prayer.
Elder Joseph the Hesychast turned with insistence to his sure refuge of prayer, seeking an answer from on high. "Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify Me" (Ps. 48:15 LXX), was something that the blessed Elder knew well from his ascetic life.
Falling to his face with tears, pain of heart, and deep humility, he pleaded:
"We have sinned and trespassed against You, O Lord, and we have betrayed Your Most Holy will. Justly You have turned Your face from us, for we have confused and mocked the light of Your Truth. We have closed our eyes to the bedrock of the Truth, Your unswerving and unshakable Church, Your All-Holy Body, which You established amongst us through Your own presence, and which we have handed over to the conjectures of human thoughts and speculation. Remember, All-Good One, Your compassion and mercy towards us, for they are from the ages unto ages."
With pain and persistence, he continued knocking on the doors of God's compassion and mercy, and the All-Good One did not turn away from his humble supplication. As our blessed Elder Joseph related to us:
"During this intense petition, I was overcome by sleep. I discovered myself suddenly alone on one piece of the mountain of Athos that was separated from the rest. It stood in the oceans trembling from moment to moment, in danger of sinking into the sea. I was frightened and thought to myself, ‘Since this has broken off from the whole and is trembling, in a little while it'll sink and I'll be lost.’ Then, with one mighty leap, I found myself on the stable part of the mountain. Sure enough, the small section of rock that I had been standing on was swallowed up by the sea, and I glorified God Who had saved me from destruction! Immediately, I tied in the dream with the issue that had been occupying me and about which I had been petitioning the Lord not to allow me to be deceived in my judgment."
Similarly, while he was praying, Papa Ephraim of Katounakia heard a voice that told him, "In the person of the Florinites, you have renounced the entire Church."
The fathers found peace with this revelation that the Church had not ceased in its living presence. Afterwards, Elder Joseph also heard a divine voice inform him that, "the Church is found in the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Constantinople."
When, at the suggestion of Elder Joseph, they left the zealots and returned to communion with the rest of the Athonite Fathers, they truly came to know the power of Grace in the Mysteries they celebrated.
Papa Ephraim always used to see Divine Grace consecrating the venerable gifts into the body and blood of Christ during the Divine Liturgy. For the entire time he was with the zealots, he saw something like a veil in front of him, hindering him from seeing this Divine Grace distinctly. This veil was withdrawn when he returned to the living Church.
In speaking about this, Elder Ephraim said: "First I, then Old Joseph, received revelations spiritually regarding the calendar scandal; that is, that the living Church is in Constantinople and not in the faction of the so-called zealots. We returned then to the living Church, where the rest of the Holy Mountain also is."
After being reconciled with the Church once again under the Ecumenical Patriarchate, in 1952 they went to the neighbouring brotherhood of Danielaioi to celebrate Pascha. The fathers welcomed them with much love: "Welcome, welcome. Elder Joseph, please take the stasidion [chair in church reserved for the elders]. Father Ephraim, please come and celebrate the Liturgy for us."
"The Danielaioi chanted the hymn 'Theotoke Parthene' (O Virgin Theotokos) on the solea and I, standing in the sanctuary, could almost see the Mother of God; so great and so tangible was the grace I was feeling,' the Elder confessed with nostalgia.
But Father Nikephoros (a companion of the elders), accustomed to their zealot neighbours, started grumbling and getting very upset. The Elder found himself in a difficult position. While praying, he felt that the will of God opposed him. He was frightened then. He consulted Elder Gabriel, the Abbot at the Monastery of Dionysiou, as well as Father Gerasimos, the Hymnographer. They told him: "My brother, obey your spiritual father." In prayer it was even harder. He felt that God had imposed a penance on him. The dilemma was whether to maintain obedience or follow the Church. He was forced to choose the first option, which made us realize that obedience is fundamental to the Church; for the divine founder of the Church "humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death, even death on a Cross" (Phil. 2:8).
Then, he went through a crisis of conscience of another kind. He, who had been informed that he was subject to the Patriarchate, and that the word "Church" means love, which he found in the warm behaviour of Danielaioi; he whose heart leapt for joy when he said the word "Church" like a child's heart leaps when it needs its mother's hug; he who considered Elder Joseph and his brotherhood his own beloved family; how could he now abandon them? Fortunately, these doubts lasted only a few days. He then thought: "In spirit I will always be with the Church, but with my body I will be with the Zealots for a while, as long as my elder is alive."
Thus he made peace with himself. He waited patiently until 1975, i.e. for 23 years. He never gave anyone the right to criticize him. When he finally established his own brotherhood, he left the Zealots forever with great humility.

Message from ROCA Synod

Message of the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia
The danger of "narodopraviya" "народоправия"

Dear priests and religious brothers and sisters!

Gathered in the God-preserved city Odessa, members of the ROCOR Synod of Bishops welcome you Paschal greeting: Christ is Risen!

No Christian is now no doubt that we are living in the last days, when the waning faith and spirituality, and are replaced by superstition, materialism and sensuality. Apostasy processes and try to capture the church body we see a retreat and loss of consciousness, even in the church of true environment. Especially clearly this is manifested in an increasingly noticeable tendency to lay rukovodstvennogo (руководственного) to assert its influence in the parishes. In itself a good idea, if the laity is an initiative and become more active participants in parish life. But it is dangerous when they assimilate themselves interference with the advent of spiritual guidance. It is known that, for example, the heresy of Presbyterianism "negates the need for the clergy to participate in the issue of salvation and, therefore, in the Presbyterian Church there is no episcopal device, and church organization is a collection of parishes administered by pastors and elders elected by the congregation" [1] . With great regret, we are witnessing similar dangerous trends in our parishes. The desire of some people to take a leading position subordinate to the will of priests, abbots, and even bishops, is now apparent reality. In this regard, we have to warn the flock of great danger and harmfulness of such a trend. No opinion gleaned from the Internet can not substitute for spiritual experience and the Holy. Spirit gifts of the pastor in the ordination. The priest could not sufficiently well-versed in economic matters, but it does not mean that it is for this reason must be pushed aside by the advent of general guidance, since the main purpose of parish life - saving, rather than material prosperity. All the parish must be subordinated to this primary objective - the fight against sin and the acquisition of the grace of the Holy Spirit.. This is the main task of the rector, who must lead his flock along this path. And for the sake of the great importance of this way, the abbot of the authority shall be inviolable and not be subjected to groundless criticism, even more so - for the sake of criticism. It's hard to know our pious fathers, but, unfortunately, have forgotten some reckless contemporaries, putting their intelligence above the church tradition and gracious gifts of the Holy. Spirit. Therefore, we, the members of the Synod of Bishops, invite all the faithful of our Church does not violate the established centuries the church structure and order, commanded the faithful generations of our ancestors, always bearing in mind the elementary truths of our Orthodox dispensation:

"The priesthood is the Sacrament in which the Holy Spirit through the laying on correctly chosen svjatitelskogo (Episcopal) delivers the sacraments, and to feed the flock of Christ. "Let a man so account of us as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God" (1 Cor 4.1). "Take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God which He purchased with His own blood" (Acts 20.28) "[2].

All true so far as I know. Liberals will ruin us yet.   A...

Snopes said this is correct in some ways, but that students were not required to memorize the sharada. However, this program has occurred in several states.

When we get 100,000,000, that's one hundred million, willing Christians to BOND together, voice their concerns and vote, we can take back America with God's help.

Become one of the One hundred  million... Then let's get 200 million.  It can be done just by sending this email to your friends.

Do the math.  It only takes a single willing heart and a fed up SOUL. God Bless America and Shine your light on Her!

In  1952 President Truman established one day a year as a "National Day of Prayer."

In 1988 President Reagan Designated the first Thursday in May of each year as The National Day of Prayer.

In June 2007 (then) Presidential Candidate Barack Obama Declared that the USA "Was no  longer a Christian nation.

In May 2009 President  Obama dismissed our 21st annual National Day of Prayer ceremony at  the White House under the ruse of "not wanting to offend anyone"

Sept. 25, 2009, a Muslim Prayer Day was held on the west front of the U.S. Capitol Building, the site where U.S. Presidents have been inaugurated since 1981. There were over 50,000 Muslims In D.C. that day President Obama dismissed our national day of prayer and now it is okay for an event at our capitol for Islamists???  But wait, it has not stopped even  now!!!

February 17-19 , 2015,  A Muslim prayer was recited at the start of the second day of the White House summit on “Countering Violent Extremism,” but no other religious text was  presented during the portion of the event that was open to the press. Imam Sheikh Sa’ad Musse Roble, president of the World Peace Organization in Minneapolis, Minn., recited a “verse from the Quran” following remarks by Obama administration officials and Democratic members of Congress.

Now President Obama is encouraging schools to teach the Quran for extra credit, while at the same time, they cannot even talk about  the Bible, God, pray, or salute the American Flag.

The direction this country is headed should strike fear in the heart of every Christian.

Send this to ten people, or even one hundred and ten! And, send it to the person who Sent it to you!.. To let them know that indeed, it was sent out to many more.

Muslims Make Shoes with Cross on Bottom

While Pope Francis washed and kissed the feet of Muslim migrants on Western Easter, the Muslim Turks were busy manufacturing shoes and slippers with a cross engraved in the sole. The shoe is considered unclean in the Islamic belief. This is a sign of contempt and humiliation to Christianity, each time you take a step, you are stepping on the cross !

About a year ago The Holy Synod of the Church of Greece had made a statement condemning the fact that shoes with a depiction of the Holy Cross on the soles had entered the market in Greece. No doubt they are still being made and used in Turkey and other Islamic countries. They must make great Ramadan gifts.

Epistle of the Council of Bishops
of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia
to our faithful pastors and beloved flock

As God willed, in 1920 a portion of the one Church of Russia found itself, as a result of the bloody Revolution, outside the boundaries of the homeland, where thirty-four bishops, headed by Metropolitan Anthony of Kiev, founded the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia.  The flock of our Church has been comprised of emigres from all parts of Russia.  Thus has our Church existed for seventy years.  And now many heterodox Christians are converting to the Orthodox Faith and joining it.  The canons of the Church, the decisions of the All-Russia Council of 1917-1918 and the 1920 decree of His Holiness Patriarch Tikhon form the foundation of the portion of the Church of Russia which is abroad.  Supreme authority belongs to the Council of Bishops, who govern the Church independently.  But this temporary autonomy has not rent apart the seamless robe of the Body of Christ.

The Russian pastors and flock abroad have always remained a branch unsundered from and spiritually united with the Mother Church, which has been crucified by the minions of Antichrist who have risen up against Christ and His Church.  Far from our homeland, which has been cut off from us by the Iron Curtain, we have lived through great struggles of the faithful children of the Church and have experienced the tribulations of the Mother Church as her own, rejoicing in her joys and fervently praying for those who suffer in our native land.

In defense of the persecuted, Metropolitan Anthony, the First Hierarch of our Church constantly appealed to the primates of the autocephalous Churches, to the governments of Christian nations, asking for moral help at each new blow directed against the Church: The imprisonment of Patriarch Tikhon, the danger of the false council of the Renovationist Schism, etc.

Our bishops have been part of the episcopate of the Church of Russia, never having separated themselves from it.  They commemorated the name of His Holiness Patriarch Tickhon at the divine services until his repose.  Afterwards, they commemorated the name of the legitimate locum tenens of the Patriarchal Throne, Metropolitan Peter of Krutitsa, on the basis of the decision of the Council of 1917-1918, despite the many years he spent in prison, until his repose in exile.  The head of our Church remained and called himself the Metropolitan of Kiev until the end of his life.

One after another, His Holiness the Patriarch and even Metropolitan Sergius considered us their own and wrote to us abroad.  Yet Metropolitan Sergius, while only the deputy of the locum tenens, unexpectedly exalted his own authority, violated the episcopate’s oneness of mind, and, contrary to the opinions of the overwhelming majority of the hierarchs and without consulting with them, issued his own declaration on the unity of the interests of the Church and the atheist government.  The senior hierarchs, Metropolitans Peter and Cyril of Kazan, condemned this act and severed communion with Metropolitan Sergius.

The portion of the Church of Russia abroad followed their example.  The Council of Bishops, in their encyclical dated 9 September 1927, declared:

“The free portion of the Church of Russia is terminating administrative relations with the ecclesiastical administration in Moscow [i.e., with Metropolitan Sergius and his synod], in view of the fact that normal relations with it are impossible and because of its enslavement by the atheist regime, which is depriving it of freedom to act according to its own will and of freedom to govern the Church in accordance with the canons.”

Thus, it was Metropolitan Sergius who created the schism within the episcopate of the Church of Russia. Some (the majority) trod the path of martyrdom; others chose that of a forced compromise.

Within months of the regime’s legalization of the ecclesiastical administration unexampled reprisals were directed against the majority of the bishops who disagreed with Metropolitan Sergius.  Audaciously, without having any right to do so, Metropolitan Sergius retired the inflexible ones, personally suspending them from serving the divine services, thus giving the authorities grounds for bringing them to trial, imprisoning them in jails and camps, and exiling them, where they died as martyrs for Him Who loved them.

This vendetta against the episcopate brought it nearly to the point of total annihilation.  Metropolitan Sergius had to create a hierarchy anew.  Those bishops who managed to escape the devastation went into the catacombs, i.e., led an illegal existence.

Unvanquished catacomb Christians who totally repudiate the contemporary Patriarchate of Moscow, despite terrible and pitiless persecutions, exist in great numbers, by God’s mercy, even in our times, though, alas, they have no single hierarchy.

The free portion of the Church of Russia has remained spiritually, and with regard to grace, with the martyrs and confessors, glorifying their struggle and seeing there the glory and triumph of the Church during the dark and bloody days of her devastation.

Carefully preserving the memory of the martyrs and desiring to emulate their struggle (in the not always easy conditions of life abroad), the Council of Bishops, conscious of its duty before the Mother Church, and supported by clergy and the faithful in Russia, did what could not be done in the homeland: it glorified all the new martyrs and new confessors as saints, entrusting the fate of the Church and Russia to their prayers.

By the act of canonization, the Council of Bishops bore witness to our real and unbroken bond in prayer with them in the one Church of Russia.

With fear and trembling, and aware of our own unworthiness, we consider ourselves their kinsmen in Christ Jesus.

We are striving to preserve outside Russia that for which they received the crowns of martyrdom.  And only the renunciation of the martyrs can place us outside the Church of Russia.  May God forbid!

Now, when the carefully erected Iron Curtain is beginning to crumble, we have the possibility to meet with and have direct fellowship with our brethren and sisters in the homeland and to rejoice in their steadfastness and firmness in the Faith and in love for Christ.  The grace of God strengthens them and puts the ungodly to shame.

We believe and confess that in those churches of the Patriarchate of Moscow where the priest fervently believes and sincerely prays, showing himself to be not only a “minister of the cult”, but also a good shepherd who loves his sheep, to those who approach him with faith, the grace of salvation is accessible in the mysteries. Such churches are few in number on the immense territory of the Russian land.

The churches of the catacomb Christians, our brethren, in which the divine services are celebrated by priests who have preserved canonical succession from those who received the crown of martyrdom, the true archpastors of the Church, are even fewer in number and inaccessible to the vast mass of believers.

This is why priests and believers from Russia are appealing to us to cover them with our omophorion, to impart grace to them.  Our pastoral conscience tells us that we not only can, but we must help them, investigating in each case the reasons which impel them to turn to us.  However, we are approaching this our new ministry with great caution, trusting in the help of God, for what is impossible for man is possible for God.  We still do not know how far the Soviet regime has become democratic and to what extent perestroika is real.  For our part, we are ready to extend our hand to those in need of our help, if God so blesses.

Will we be creating a schism within the Church by doing this, as some who do not understand the Church’s life of grace think and say?  They obviously have forgotten or do not know that the schism within the Church of Russia was caused sixty-three years ago by Metropolitan Sergius and his followers.

The Patriarchate of Moscow has not overcome the terrible consequences of the declaration, having lost the inner freedom of the Church by flagrantly violating Canon 30 of the Holy Apostles, and it stands resolutely and irrevocably on the path of destruction, even now when all levels of society are freeing themselves from the sins, falsehood and hypocrisy of the past decades.

In due course, former renovationists entered the ecclesiastical administration of the Patriarchate of Moscow, and they have introduced modernism and a passion for ecumenism.

The following question lies before us: Can the hierarchy of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia have its own bishops in Russia, on Russian territory?  We think and believe that it not only can but must.  For Russian bishops the land of Russia in not the territory of another autocephalous church.  The territory of Russia is vast, and in it there are millions of believers who remain without priests, without the nourishment of grace.  We are receiving a great many letters from believers who are suffering from lack of spiritual food, in which they beg us to provide them with priests.  Like poor beggars they beseech us to give them spiritual bread.  Can we then place in their outstretched hands the stone of indifference?  Let it not be so!  It is our duty to do everything possible to satisfy their spiritual hunger.

The Patriarchate of Moscow obviously cannot do this, and therefore has no right to hinder us.

No one knows what still awaits our homeland, what changes will occur in her life even in the near future.  While there is a crack open, possibly only temporarily, we must take advantage of it.  The rest is in God’s hands; for our God is the God Who works wonders.  May His holy will be done!
