After my death our beloved Church abroad will break three ways ... first the Greeks will leave us as they were never a part of us ... then those who live for this world and its glory will go to Moscow ... what will remain will be those souls faithful to Christ and His Church. ~St. Philaret of NY

And A General Sharing: ROCA: (in human-English translation, by brother Vladimir Djambov in Sofia & the Russian original): 2016 Paschal Epistle of Archbishop Sophrony of St. Petersburg and Northern Russia

Much thanks for this translation,  brother Vladimir!

2016 PASCHAL EPISTLE OF ARCHBISHOP SOPHRONY

The Holy Church and Her faithful children exclaim now and unto the ages

The Apostle James wrote in his epistle to us: "
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh unto you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He shall lift you up. Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge." (Jam. 4:7-11).

This is the indispensable condition of the sign of being a part of the living organism of the Church, when we not only externally proceed together to the Holy Chalice, but we also internally empathize with our brothers in Christ. The Lord, incarnate and crucified for our sake, has created on earth the Church, which empathizes with each and everyone of Her members. Judas wanted to subjugate Christ to his own will, and when he saw that He, Our Lord, had chosen the path of building the Kingdom of Heaven through His procession to Calvary, Judas came to such indignation that he betrayed Him. The same thing happens now, when we want to subdue the Church of Christ to our human, earthly and passion-filled will. Lying at the heart of Judas's sin is pride, which is quite removed from submitting to the will of Jesus, as well as our
striving after doing what we want to, rather than what God through His Apostles has commanded us to do. This is exactly what Satan, the filthy evil spirit, needs. That is the spirit which entered Judas.

Just the thought of our partaking in the insane sin of Judas is able to bring us into trepidation. But let us reason for ourselves: greed, envy, slander, condemning our neighbor,
overly self-respect, the spirit of the  acquisitiveness of earthly things,  ... Do you think our actions are much far different from the treacherous acts of the Iscariot traitor, i.e. Judas? At times a crafty idea sneaks into our minds, that it is impossible for us to even imagine any further [spiritual] development without our earthly well-being. By the way, the Church does not forbid (to a certain extent) to improve one's earthly welfare. But let us always remember, dear fathers, brethren and sisters, that the over-whelming powerful spirit of desiring our enrichment and our attachment to worldly goods, is what  led Judas to spiritual slavery, to his betraying the Divine Sufferer to death. These vices even today are pushing people onto the road of betrayal of Christ and His Church.

One day, a fool-for-Christ told me: "Judas did not hang himself, [i.e. he is not gone], he sits in the Church." I have long pondered on these words and have realized that bodily Judas hanged himself, but his spirit is still alive in our actions.

We see a manifestation of Judas's sin everywhere in these impending apocalyptic times. Please note: we in our daily lives sometimes pronounce on our lips, the name of Antichrist more often, than we do the Holy Name of Jesus and we look forward to the coming, not of Christ, but of His enemy, trying to see in everything, the signs of his wicked coming... [i.e. our pre-occupation].

And so now, the so-called "Pan-Orthodox Council" is soon to be convened – by
outer appearance, an Orthodox one, but in its spirit – one that has nothing to do with Christ. It is expected to discuss, including, the issue of the recognition of the Roman Catholic heretics as, 'equal-in-grace to Orthodox Christians!' May the Lord preserve us from this treacherous spirit.

Together with you I pray, my dear pastors, monastics and all of the faithful of our diocese, that the now Risen Christ may strengthen in us the true spirit of brotherly love and
may give us strength to stand in His truth unflichingly, despite all the lawlessness multiplying around us.

    Indeed Christ is risen!

Humble Sophronius, Archbishop of St. Petersburg
and of Northern Russia
