After my death our beloved Church abroad will break three ways ... first the Greeks will leave us as they were never a part of us ... then those who live for this world and its glory will go to Moscow ... what will remain will be those souls faithful to Christ and His Church. ~St. Philaret of NY

O feast full of blood!

...Better would it have been not to have sworn thine oath, O iniquitous Herod, grandson of lies!  For even though thou didst make thy vow, it was not well sworn.  Better it would have been to be proved false, than to cut off the head of the forerunner, who spake the truth...

August Menaion p. 324 and 329

To make an excuse using another excuse.
To cover up one lie by telling another lie.
To add another iniquity on top of an iniquity.

Better not to tell the first lie. But then, when confronted with the first lie, it is better to admit it than to make up another lie to try to cover it up. (O the disgrace of the passions!)
