After my death our beloved Church abroad will break three ways ... first the Greeks will leave us as they were never a part of us ... then those who live for this world and its glory will go to Moscow ... what will remain will be those souls faithful to Christ and His Church. ~St. Philaret of NY

Archdeacon Herman comments on the Appeal

Vladimir Djambov offers us a human "ironing out" of the machine translation.
Thank you, Vladimir.

Protodeacon Herman: Finally, they have seriously taken after collection of the “splinters”.
Author: Metropolitan Agafangel. Publication date: May 31, 2019 . Category: Author column .

I was all intending to write my thoughts about the reflections of Vl. Metropolitan of the fragments [splinters] ... and have never gathered myself to do it. Business, worries accumulate and time passes by.

But nevertheless, better late than never: we must warmly congratulate Vl. Metropolitan, that he toiled to put forward interesting deep ideas that stand out well [favorably] against the background of our gray everyday life. And in actual fact – whoever today thinks or just sees any benefit [favor] in this? And come to think - what a wealth in this respect was the Church Abroad! What an intellectual and spiritual capital it has accumulated over the past century! Our miserable situation of today should especially attune each and every one of us on the way [for us] to get out of this position, it should instigate all of us to put our thoughts forward – in a word, to act , and not proudly put up locks in our rightness and purity. Indeed, we undoubtedly know that around us, but temporarily not with us, there is a large number of like-minded people, our unconditional brothers. Has not the time come to think seriously about this? In fact, what do we see [witness] ": an elderly priest dies, and immediately the parish stalls and our mission, the mission of the traditional Church Abroad, goes away with him. What did we fight for, some 15 years ago? Was it indeed for us to put such an ignominious and useless end?

Therefore, everyone should accept the thoughts [reflections] of Metropolitan Agafangel with sincere gratitude and no preconceived back thoughts. It is not clear, insulting, and sad to see that under that deep article there is not a single response, not a single comment ... It disheartens. The Church is a living organism in which life, and not apathy, must dwell [abide]. There should be exchanges of opinions, even disputes are not dreaded, but there must be life, hope, and generally put – some doing [activity]. One may disagree with all the statements, with all that is written, but one must be glad that the first, as it seems to us, serious attempt has been made to meet, to extend a fraternal hand, forgetting the insults, and the quarrels. So far, declarative statements have been heard from various sides, whose ultimate goal was to show that our conscience is clear, [that] we are doing everything possible, but we find no response. No ! Here, for the first time, a real step was made , which many, many expected.

But now, after these approving, positive phrases, let us turn to what we wrote above: in church matters there may be disagreements, disaccords, dissenting opinions, etc., but one should invariably keep in mind not to impose one’s opinion, but [rather] the common church benefit.

In his article “On Splinters, Schisms [splits], and Prospects for Collecting [in one],” Vl. Metropolitan offers a lot of interesting, undisputed thoughts about the unity and uniqueness of the Church, thoughts developed by many Holy Fathers, in particular St. Cyprian of Carthage. In the Church Abroad this theme was brilliantly expounded by the late Bishop George / Grabbe /. I can say that in that which concerns me, they have greatly influenced my formation and have left an indelible mark. Nevertheless, it is highly debatable to refer these lofty thoughts relating to the Church – the Body of Christ to our petty, internal conflicts. The Church and the Church Abroad, after all [whatever one may think], are two different quantities. Belonging to the Church Abroad, we are naturally full members of the Church. For us, the Church Abroad is certainly the Church, but still the Church is bigger than the Church Abroad. That is why, to talk about those who want to collect "fragments", that they preach the ecumenical theory of the branches, and therefore are stricken by the most evil [worst] ecumenical heresy, is simply not serious. Time has now come for us to understand what people are saying: it was not the Church that was divided into fragments, but the Church Abroad. Therefore, it is with great pleasure that we state that this is exactly what follows from the recent Synodal Appeal, proposing to establish Eucharistic communion between all parts of the undivided ROCOR.

Alas, at the same time with this wise decision, it is clear that the wounds of recent saddest disagreements have not yet been eradicated and the denigration of Archbishops Andronicus and Sophrony continues. People speak there were no canonical reasons in their recent separation. We will not go into any analysis: were the reasons for separation canonical or not. Suffice it to say that there were reasons. No one can seriously argue with that. And these reasons were never properly considered, which was what gave birth to a mutual, still not obsolete, bitter feelings.

Therefore, we dare to solemnly appeal to both sides : to once and for all abandon mutual accusations, to not constantly add fuel to the fire and to not continue that destructive activity, whose victims we have been unwittingly these last years.

Is it possible, without loss of trust, to extend a brotherly hand to all who have come out of the undivided ROCOR and have not adhered to the MP, and at the same time consider the Lords Andronicus and Sophronius alien to the Church Abroad, and almost her enemies? People say that everyone should be responsible for the future of our Church, that we need monasteries, youth programs and meetings, that these are all issues relating to our survival. We already have an exemplary convent in Egorovka with the outstanding Matushka [Mother Superior] Abbot Alexandra, there is a successfully developing male monastery in Moldova with Vladyka Anfim. Is the monastery of Vladyka Sophrony in the Pskov region really otiose and needless for us? Do the youth gatherings held in Mountain View under the omophorion of Vladyka Andronicus not meet the needs required for the successful future of our Church? And finally, is it possible to atack with such ruthlessness Vladyka Andrew? How does a resurgent church benefit from this attitude to the head of a thriving populous Melbourne parish, a man with a twenty-year-long Jordanville monastic experience, an outstanding representative of the Jordanville school of icon painting, a competent teacher? Do we really have an excess of people of such caliber that we can neglect them? We do understand that the question of bishop's consecration may represent a canonical problem, but is it not simpler and more prudent to talk about the possibility of consecration, which was resorted to in other instanses, than to talk about the overthrow from the dignity? For us, without any ulterior motive, they all are our Church Abroad [Diocese] Brethren, whom we consider ourselves in complete unity with. Of course, it is more than commendable to take care of establishing dialogues, but in order for it to be plausible, one must first of all take care of the unification of one’s own family.

But, how joyfully and encouragingly it is to read – what we have written about more than once – that, strangely enough, there were several truths in the tragic question of breaking up the Church Abroad and its disintegration into fragments, as the Synodal Address states: Ït is obvious that for the ROCOR, to reprove each other for what happened in the recent past is not beneficial.” Yes, everyone could have their own truth, and these truths could even be hostile to each other. We are not at all abandoning our truth as of that time, but today the question is not this, but it is rather in the fact that these truths, which have followed different paths, be united in a standing in favor for the historic Russian Church Abroad that unites us all.

Yes, it is joyful to read such seemingly simple truths that there are groups in territories, like the former USSR, as well as in the whole world, to have preserved Orthodoxy intact, with which it is necessary to establish a dialogue, thanks to which “mutual concessions for the sake of unity in Christ will become possible. This is the only healthy and correct way. The very unwillingness for such a dialogue is a clear and obvious sign of the degradation and confluence into sectarianism that has taken place.”

Such thoughts of Vladyka Metropolitan, which inspire sincere joy and hope, have found official ecclesiastical concretization in the recent Synodal Address, the conclusion of which we gratefully cite mot à mot :

In view of the critical situation that has arisen, we propose to establish Eucharistic communion between those who previously were in the undivided ROCOR and make common only the Bishops' Council, while maintaining full administrative autonomy for those who wish to take this step.”

After so many disappointments and – it would almost seem – the loss of hope in the majority of the Church Abroad congregation to have the opportunity to be heard, this Appeal acquires for us a straightforward prophetic character. God grant this !

On our part, we will use all the opportunities to implement in life [practice] this wise decision of our bishops.

Lukewarmness in questions of faith, the impoverishment of love and indifference to problems of our neighbors and co-religionists - alas, the reality of life in Christ is in our times of apostasy. Maybe such a limited access to the active Christian and social life of small remnants of the faithful, "small herds," is included in God's house-building plans ... And it may be another thing - totalitarian sects, ecumenical false church of the "World Orthodoxy", dozens and hundreds of others and other Orthodox and religious and religious groups and dozens and hundreds of other Orthodox and religious and religious organizations and dozens and hundreds of other Orthodox and religious and religious organizations, dozens and hundreds of other Orthodox and religious and religious organizations, dozens and hundreds of others and other Orthodox and non-Orthodox organizations. Religious groups that provide a huge, if not to say the main influence on "all languages" living on the earth - show the disunited groups of anti-ecumenical Christians that it is necessary to unite and pray for a rebirth in Russia the authorities of the anointed of God, without which the life of the Church is toil — see for yourself what is ...

Save, O Lord, Thy people and bless thy wealth. Victory to the future pious Emperor of our All Russia, on the resistance give, and Your save the Cross Your residence.

Appeal from Our Beloved Synod

http://internetsobor.org/index.php/novosti/rptsz/2019-43
Appeal

Of the ROCA Synod of Bishops to all those who were formerly in the united and undivided Russian Church Abroad.

Dear archpastors, priests, monastics, and laity!
We all remember with gratitude the years we lived in the undivided Church Abroad, up to the conclusion of a union with the apostate and heretical Moscow Patriarchate.  The greatest tragedy for all of us was the fragmentation of the Church and the attempt to completely destroy it by, prepared over the course of several years, merging with the so-called “Soviet Church,” controlled by forces hostile to Christ.
Each member of the Church, from the bishop to the layperson, is responsible for its integrity and purity.  We cannot stop thinking and praying for the restoration of the lost unity of the Russian Church Abroad.
Obviously, it is not useful today for the ROCA to make reproaches to each other about what happened in the recent past.  Here everyone has their own truth.  Our truth is that our First Hierarch witnessed how Metropolitan Vitaly signed a petition to the Sobor requesting him to retire, congratulated the new First Hierarch personally on his election and said that he was now a retired Metropolitan.  This is what he personally witnessed.
We are well aware that others have another truth and we do not intend to question it.
Now we are talking about the near future of our Church, for which everyone is responsible.  We are faced with the fact that together with the deceased priest his parish is dying, we already have several such parishes.  We are sure that others are facing this problem.  We are critically few, we need monasteries, spiritual educational institutions, youth programs to ensure that the nourishment of our flock, for which we are responsible to God, does not stop.
Due to the critical situation that has arisen, we propose to establish Eucharistic communion among those who were previously in the undivided ROCA and only make common the Sobor of Bishops, while maintaining full administrative autonomy of those who wish to take this step.
If preliminary negotiations are needed, then we are ready for them.

Resolved: Confirm that the ROCOR will adhere to the practice that has always existed in the Church Abroad. Our ministry outside Russia was approved by the decree of the highest Church Authority of the All-Russian Orthodox Church in 1920 by decree number 362, which was recognized at that time by all Local Churches. Considering that the Bishops' Council of the Serbian Church with its two patriarchs legalized the independent existence of the Church Abroad under Metropolitan Anthony in the territory of the Serbian Church, we consider the presence of our parishes in Serbia canonically and historically justified. The Resolution “The ROCOR Regulations” of 1964 in paragraph 1 of paragraph 3 states that the Church Abroad has the care of the flock of the Russian Church in scattering throughout the world, which is reflected even in its very name Foreign, ie abroad, which never raised any questions for the period of the historical existence of the Church Abroad.
